haha yes, I was eventually asked to join a group to go under the bleachers outside for a few beers and some kisses 😮 then went back in to dance and won a twisting contest… go figure? We did go steady for awhile. 🙂 (Being on the soccer team helped, I think… or maybe it was the vitalis and slathering my father’s old Spice aftershave.)
I remember the awkwardness for both parties, but this makes me appreciate the pressure put on the male side of things. I liked “pompadour and slick with Vitalis”….the phrase that is…haha.
I remember those excruciating days of dances where girls always waited to be asked to dance. I was one of them! It never occurred to me that the boys were shy too and under so much pressure. Thanks for the memories! 🙂
ohhhh those cruel cruel days of middle school dances — high school dances nowadays are much more sophisticated. The twisted cruelty of those folding chairs and standing and (for the girls in those days) waiting to be asked. And thinking your prince charming would come and then this guy with Vitalis in his hair come! 🙂
At first read, I thought it was the DJ with the hair combed back, but as I reread to try to find the missing “twist” (which I did not find), I saw that it was you with the hair. Very clever.

Great piece. I’m not seeing any version of the word “twist,” but I think it’s as simple as this:
Hair twisted back into a duck’s ass…
😉 (Which is a fantastic descriptive visual, by the way.)

Fun quadrille. My aunt used to date a guy with a DA and pegleg pants so tight, 7 year old me christened him Zipper Legs, to my aunt’s chagrin
