A Lost Silver Dollar

09 Dec

The clear Vodka bottle stood full, unopened on the top of the refrigerator. It has been there for hours, turning into days, weeks, and months. Every time I opened the refrigerator door— I would looked at it, and sing “Choices.” (Written by Billy Yates and Mike Curtis made popular by George Jones), and I would go about my routine day.   But, eventually— one evening I took the bottle down and placed it on the counter. I found a clean mason jar and placed a few cubes of ice into it—poured from the bottle two mason jar fingers—staring out the kitchen window, I saw the full moon looking like a lost silver dollar—I raised my glass.

  Let loving hearts ache

Release all blame and accept

The seedlings of trust

In case your curious:

First I have heard of “George Jones” , enjoyed that. I also never heard of drinking from a Mason Jar — well, except once, a retro restaurant served in jars like that and I thought it odd. So due to your poem, I looked it up. I learned they were created in 1858 by John Landis Mason, a New Jersey native. And hipsters are now re-using them as a symbol of some sort. But maybe in your life….

As marijuana become legal, booze addiction and opioid addiction drop, so 100 years from now, I wonder if it will be bongs in poems? Merry Christmas.

That’s a dangerous move for a recovering alcoholic–which I couldn’t help thinking of with my addictive personality–but that aside, this is such a fine poem about honoring your choices and trusting Self and Nature and Conscience and God. And after toasting the moon, one could always pour libations on the ground. Beautiful still image, glass raised.

If there is a seedling, there can be a flower… Let’s hope there will be.

Life is sometimes about timing, I would gladly sip a drink with the moon 🙂

I love the discipline in this… when the time finally comes the sips is so much better… and sharing it with the moon has to be the best.

You have written a fine poem here, ZQ. Indeed we all have choices, and you have expressed this well. Raising my ‘glass’ to you as you celebrate the holidays, ZQ!

There is great acceptance in that haiku……..I can see you, looking at the moon, with that aching, loving heart. I hope your holiday season is filled with family and laughter, my friend.
