Childhood Vacation

14 Sep

I smell the sweet pines

In  New Hampshire summer time.

Papa says it’s fine to dive in the lake

Between lily pads and sky.

I surface with a smile, out of breath.

It’s time to go home;

But not, until dawn.

Dusk fades with chasing lights.

Mason jar and fine mesh net

Captures the last fire fly.

Mama says, “Let them go,

There is no room in the car.”

I left it, with the lid off,

Escaping glass echoes

Of our last vacation night.

Dear RK – I did not enjoy being chastised by our dear Poets United host, Mary, however in response to her pointing out that I have not commented on your poetry I made it my business (as soon as I was able ) to get on over here … Oh my! Absolutely, lush images in exquisite flowing poem – dare I say there is a familiar aching nostalgia in your writing. It was worth being “chastised ” to find you sooner than later. Looking forward to reading and responding with you – You are an extraordinary talent. Bravo ! Images of lily pads and mason jars and dusk and fireflies and … Papa… ahhhhhhhh …

I rally enjoyed these late summer memories, especially the last swim in the lake. It reminded me of September swims in lakes about a decade ago. I second Mary concerning your poetry.

My parents came from the East Coast. Myself, I grew up in the Western part of the U.S. and have never seen a firefly or a lily pad outside the Botanic Gardens. Your poem really brought a wonderful scene to life!

I love that “there is no room in the car.” What a day of diving and delving, gathering and letting go. The sound of escape and echoing glass–how lovely.

gorgeous imagery…especially love the symmetry between the fireflies left free to fly out of their glass jar and the echoes of your last vacation night.
